Demand for nonhalogenated flame retardants in wire and cable applications has been increasing considerably in recent years due to regulation and environmental and health concerns of halogen-based flame retardants. As a result, nonhalogenated phosphorus flame retardants are increasingly being used as the more environmentally friendly.

When blended with thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) or thermoplastic polyester elastomers (TPE-E), Nofia flame retardants are well suited for use in wire and cable applications with low smoke halogen free requirements.

Nofia flame retardants show improved mechanical properties and surface appearance when compared to other non-halogenated flame retardant systems used in these applications. Customers especially notice the difference when the competitive system contains high loadings of non-melting additives. This is important because high levels of traditional, non-melting flame retardant additives leave less room for functional fillers (e.g., conductive) in the formulations.

There is true synergism between Nofia flame retardants and other flame retardants in thermoplastic elastomer formulations for wire and cable applications. This means that by combining different flame retardants, the overall FR properties are better than the sum of the different components, especially when these improved FR effects are obtained at an even lower overall loading of the total FR additives than the sum of the combined FR additives.

Benefits

  • Halogen free and non-migrating

  • Can form transparent blends when blended into different types of TPUs

  • VTM-0 rating was obtained for transparent thin sheets or films at a thickness as low as 50 micrometers

  • Enhance flame retardancy performance to pass the VW1 test

  • True synergist effect between different flame retardants to enable Polyether-based TPUs to meet V0/1.6 mm performance

  • Good heat stability (136°C for seven days) and hydrolytic stability (80°C, 21 days) tests results

  • True synergist effect between different flame retardants to obtain a V0/1.6 mm performance

  • Can form an optimized formulation that showed a combination of good FR, good tensile properties and required flow.
